Definition

What Is European Car Registration for Non-Residents?

European car registration for non-residents is the process of legally registering and insuring a vehicle in Europe without having residency in any EU country. A registered European entity acts as the vehicle's custodian while you keep full legal ownership.

Every EU country requires a local address to register a car. No address, no plates. No plates, no insurance. No insurance, no legal driving.

CarTurf solves this with a legal structure recognised by the German DMV. We register your car under our German entity as the Halter (custodian). You remain the legal owner. Your bill of sale and certificate of ownership stay in your name.

The result: German plates on your car, valid across the entire EU, EEA, UK, and beyond. You drive. We handle the paperwork.

Process

How We Register Your Car in 4 Steps

From buying a car anywhere in Europe to getting plates and insurance — four steps, no residency required.

  • 1. Buy Your Car

Find a car anywhere in Europe. Most customers buy from mobile.de or AutoScout24 in Germany. We also source cars from auctions if you'd rather not search yourself.

  • 2. We Register It

CarTurf registers the vehicle under our German entity. We become the Halter (custodian). You stay the legal owner with bill of sale and certificate of ownership in your name.

  • 3. Insurance Activates

Your car is insured the moment it's registered. You get a 10-day window to finalise paperwork. Rush option available in 48–72 hours. You can drive in Germany immediately.

  • 4. Drive Anywhere

German plates are valid across the EU, EEA, UK, Turkey, Morocco, and more. Pick up your car or we deliver to Frankfurt, Bratislava, Paris, or your location.

Cost

How Much Does It Cost?

CarTurf registration costs €249 one-time plus a tiered monthly service (from €99/mo for Autopilot, or from €49/mo for Moto). Insurance runs €700 to €3,000 per year depending on your vehicle and coverage level. German vehicle tax adds €150 to €300 annually.

Total first year: roughly €2,150–€4,550 plus the car itself. For vehicles valued over €100,000, use Autopilot Premium (€199/mo) for €100K–€500K or Autopilot Lux (€299/mo) up to €1M.

Compare that to a long-term rental. Six months of renting a mid-range car in Europe costs €6,000–9,000. No ownership. Country restrictions. Mileage caps. With CarTurf, you own the car, drive it anywhere, and the monthly cost drops every year as insurance gets cheaper.

Paying insurance quarterly adds about 10–13% to the annual cost. Annual payment is the cheapest option.

German Plates vs. Italian Plates

German registration separates the custodian (CarTurf) from the owner (you) on the documents. Italian registration puts one entity as both. German plates are valid across all of Europe including the UK. Italian plates avoid driving the car to Germany for inspection.

CarTurf now offers two registration routes.

  • German Registration

    German Registration

Uses the Halter/owner legal split. CarTurf is the Halter (custodian). You're the owner. The German DMV recognises this separation. Your car needs a TUV inspection in Germany before registration, which means the vehicle needs to be physically in Germany at least once.

  • Italian Registration

    Italian Registration

Puts CarTurf's local Italian entity as both owner and responsible party on the document. The advantage: you can buy a car in Italy and register it without ever driving to Germany. No TUV trip required.

The trade-off: parking a car with non-Italian plates in Italy for extended periods can trigger forced re-registration by local authorities. German plates don't cause this issue in other countries.

Most customers choose German registration. It's the more established route with clearer legal protections. Italian registration works best if you're buying in Italy and spending most of your time in Southern Europe.

FAQ

European Car Registration — FAQ

Common questions about registering a car in Europe without residency, German plates, and costs.

Yes. CarTurf registers your car under our German entity (GmbH). You keep the bill of sale and certificate of ownership. The German DMV recognises this custodian/owner split, so you don't need a European address or residency to get legal plates and insurance.

No. France requires proof of residency to issue a carte grise (registration document). The workaround: register through CarTurf's German entity instead. German plates are fully valid in France. You can drive, park, and stay in France with German registration.

No. Spain requires an NIE number and proof of residency. Without both, you can't register a vehicle. German plates registered through CarTurf are valid for driving in Spain without local registration.

Yes. German plates are valid throughout the EU, EEA, UK, and many non-EU countries including Turkey and Morocco. You must follow each country's local entry rules, but the plates themselves are recognised everywhere.

Through CarTurf: €249 one-time signup plus a tiered monthly service (Autopilot from €99, up to €299 for high-value vehicles, or Moto from €49). Insurance costs €700 to €3,000 per year depending on your vehicle and coverage level. German vehicle tax adds €150 to €300 annually. Total first year for a standard car: roughly €2,150 to €4,550 plus the vehicle purchase price.

Importing a US-spec vehicle into Europe is difficult and expensive. The car needs to meet EU safety and emissions standards, which often requires costly modifications. Most CarTurf customers buy a car already in Europe through mobile.de or AutoScout24 and register it through our German entity.
