Register a Car in Spain as a Non-Resident

Spanish registration is built for people who live in Spain. If you spend part of the year there, German registration lets you drive your own car legally in Spain and across Europe.

Can you register a car in Spain without being a resident?

Rarely, and it is rarely worth it. To register (matricular) a car with the DGT you must be the car's owner and prove your identity and domicile in Spain, usually with an NIE (foreigner tax number) and a Spanish address such as a padrón certificate. A car coming from another EU country also needs:

  • Deregistration for export in the country of origin
  • A Spanish ITV technical inspection and technical data sheet
  • The registration tax (Impuesto Especial sobre Determinados Medios de Transporte, form 576): 0% to 14.75% of the car's taxable value depending on CO2 emissions, unless an exemption applies
  • The municipal road tax (IVTM) and the DGT fee

Without a Spanish domicile, you do not get past the first step.

The 6-month rule for foreign-registered cars in Spain

Spanish tax law requires registration in Spain when a car is used there by a resident (or a business established in Spain). Residents must register or file the registration tax within 30 days of starting to use the car in Spain (60 days when moving residence with the relocation exemption).

For non-residents, Spain's tax authority confirmed in a 2026 binding ruling (V0265-26) that a German resident driving her German-registered car in Spain for no more than six months a year in total has no obligation to register it or pay the registration tax.

So: visitors and part-year residents with their main home elsewhere can use German plates in Spain. Keep proof of your entry dates (ferry tickets, tolls, fuel receipts).

How CarTurf gets you driving in Spain, with German plates

  1. You buy the car, new or used, in Spain, Germany or anywhere else in Europe.
  2. We register it in Germany. Our German partner CarTurf UG becomes the registered Halter; you stay the owner (Eigentümer). See Halter vs Eigentümer.
  3. You get German plates and AXA insurance. Registration takes 1–5 business days once we have the documents. Default insurance covers drivers aged 23+; drivers aged 18–22 can be added at a higher premium. AXA’s Schutzbrief for assistance abroad is included; ADAC cover can be added for €149/year.
  4. You drive in Spain and across Europe. Ongoing paperwork (vehicle tax, TÜV/HU admin, fines sent to the registered address) runs through us in English.

Customers contract with CarTurf Global FZCO (Dubai). Our German partner CarTurf UG (haftungsbeschränkt) is the registered Halter. For plans and prices, see Pricing.

Driving in Spain: licence and local rules

  • Licence: EU licences are valid. Visitors can drive on a non-EU licence; carry an International Driving Permit where your licence is not in Spanish or an EU format.
  • Low-emission zones (ZBE): Madrid, Barcelona and other cities restrict older cars. Check the rules for foreign-registered vehicles before you drive into a city centre.
  • Tolls: some motorways (autopistas de peaje) charge tolls.
  • Inspection: a German-registered car follows the German HU/TÜV schedule, not the Spanish ITV. See TÜV inspection in Germany.
