Motorhome & Van Registration in Europe

Campervans and motorhomes are a large share of non-resident registrations: buy once, tour for months, store for winter. CarTurf keeps you as owner while handling Halter registration and insurance admin.

Popular with vanlife & seasonal travelers

Why vans are different

Vans add layers cars usually do not:

  • Vehicle class after conversion (e.g. Wohnmobil)
  • Weight (e.g. under/over 3.5 t) affecting licences, tolls, sometimes tax
  • Conversions needing inspection/reclassification
  • Seasonal storage and insurance reduction when parked
  • Higher insurance variance (for motorhomes, AXA quotes run from ~€700–€800/yr Haftpflicht up to ~€1,750–€2,900/yr Vollkasko — get a quote)

Buying a van already in Germany often simplifies the first inspection compared with importing one first. Campers and vans are a core segment for CarTurf, with customers from New Zealand, Australia, the UK and North America.

Weight, class and insurance

Rules depend on the exact vehicle:

  • Licence category can change above certain weights — confirm your licence covers the finished vehicle
  • After structural conversion, technical inspection/reclassification to motorhome is typically required
  • Contents (laptops, e-bikes) are usually not on the base motor policy
  • Storage: reduce cover when parked, or deregister only if storage is truly secure

Operational guidance from common scenarios — not a guarantee for every chassis/conversion.

FAQ

Motorhome & van FAQ

Yes, through the Halter structure where it applies — you remain the owner throughout. Campers and vans are a regular part of our work, with customers from New Zealand, Australia, the UK and North America.

Not always. Licence categories change above certain weights, and a conversion can push a van over 3.5 tonnes. Check that your licence covers the finished vehicle, not the empty base van, before you commit to a build.

When the vehicle is correctly classified, yes. After a structural build it usually needs technical inspection and reclassification as a Wohnmobil. Note that contents such as laptops and e-bikes are normally not covered by the base motor policy.

A common pattern is to register first, convert, then return for inspection and reclassification. Build to EU-compatible standards from the start, otherwise the reclassification can fail and the work has to be redone.

Storage near the Remagen partner office is available. CarTurf customers pay €50/mo outdoor or €100/mo indoor; non-customers €75 and €150. Insurance can often be reduced while the vehicle is stored, and staff can start it periodically if arranged.

€249 setup, then Autopilot from €99/mo. Camper insurance varies more than car insurance — from about €700–€800 a year for Haftpflicht up to about €1,750–€2,900 for Vollkasko, based on AXA quotes — so ask for a quote on your specific vehicle. See the pricing page.

No. Standard policies typically exclude commercial hire, so renting the vehicle out is not covered under this structure.
